Insulation with more than isolated rodent droppings needs to come out rather than be covered over. Urine and droppings stay biologically active, keep producing odour that returns whenever the attic heats, and work down between the fibres where loose fill cannot be spot-cleaned. The CDC warns specifically against sweeping or vacuuming dry rodent droppings, because that makes particles airborne, and identifies hantavirus as a risk from disturbing droppings, urine and nesting material. Removal runs about $2.00 to $4.00 per square foot against $1.00 to $2.00 for clean material. The single most important thing is the order of work: seal the entry points and confirm the rodents are gone before new insulation goes in, or the new material is contaminated too and you pay for the same job twice. How to tell contamination from a stray visitor

A handful of droppings near the hatch is not the same problem as a colonised attic. Look for these, with a torch held low so raking light shows surface texture:

Isolated droppings and no other signs can often be cleaned locally, following the CDC method below. Tunnels, nests or an ammonia smell mean the material is contaminated through its depth and removal is the honest answer.

Safety, and why the method matters more than the effort

The health risk here comes from disturbing the material, not from its presence. CDC guidance on cleaning rodent-contaminated areas is explicit that you should not sweep or vacuum dry droppings and nesting material, because doing so puts particles into the air where they can be inhaled.

The CDC's approach to small-scale cleanup, in outline:

  1. Ventilate the space before entering, and stay out while it airs.
  2. Wear gloves, and use respiratory protection appropriate to the work.
  3. Wet the material first with a disinfectant or bleach solution and let it soak, rather than disturbing it dry.
  4. Wipe or pick up with a damp cloth or towel, never sweep or dry-vacuum.
  5. Double bag and dispose of the waste.
  6. Disinfect surfaces afterwards, and wash hands thoroughly.

That method scales to a few droppings on a hard surface. It does not scale to a contaminated attic full of loose fill, which is why full removal is contractor work: the containment and HEPA filtration that keep particles out of the living space below are not things you can improvise.

Anyone who is pregnant, immunocompromised, or has a respiratory condition should not do this work, and heavy infestations warrant professional handling regardless.

Steps one to three are usually a wildlife or pest control trade, and steps four to seven are an insulation trade. Some companies do both. If yours does not, make sure someone owns the handoff, because the gap between the two is exactly where this goes wrong.

Should you do this one yourself?

Our view is no, and this is one of the clearer cases on the site. The material has to be handled without making dust, in a hot confined space, while keeping particles from reaching the rooms below. That needs containment, negative pressure and HEPA filtration, and improvising those is how contamination ends up in the living space rather than out of it.

Cleaning up a few droppings using the CDC's wet-wipe method is a reasonable homeowner task. Clearing a contaminated attic is not.
